Lily – Greythorn Central

Located on the corner of Agnes Avenue and Doncaster Road

These days trackies are de-rigueur for Gen Zs and Gen Alphas. They have comfort sorted! Lily has just had a haircut, and she is in her favourite outfit, ready to go. She represents the new generation of residents who are drawn to the centre’s shops, cafés and fast-food outlets. Whether it’s picking up a kebab, a sushi roll, fish and chips or a donut to tide them over until dinner, most days you’ll find Lily and a few of her mates hanging out in Greythorn.

Greythorn’s residents of all ages enjoy their sports – athletics, bowling, basketball, cricket, football, swimming, and tennis have all been popular leisure activities in Greythorn, and today the district is home to many great clubs including Greythorn Auskick, the Greythorn Falcons, the Koonung Comets, St Stephen’s Greythorn Cricket Club, the Koonung Heights Netball Club … the list goes on. Famous Greythornians include Olympic gold medallist, Steven Hooker, OAM, who attended Greythorn Primary School. Today, the shopping centre reflects the popularity of Pilates and gym workouts.

The statue’s plaque reads:

Hi, I am Lily, I’m in Year 11 at Balwyn High School. I have just been to the hairdresser …. and I Iove having a manicure, facial and a workout at Greythorn too.

Something to think about:

Lily is emblematic of Greythorn’s fashion-forward youth. Don’t you love her hair colour! By 1960 Greythorn Central had its first hairdressing salon, Chrystelle’s Ladies Hairdresser. In those days permanent waves, bleaching, tinting, and frosted tips were in all in vogue. Colour has never been out of fashion since! Lily’s outfit is inspired by anime. Do you have a favourite anime character? Since the 1970s families from East and South East Asia have settled in Greythorn. The first Chinese restaurant, Cathay, was established in 1970. On its menu were the ‘best spring rolls’ and a ‘delicious sweet and sour pork dish’. Today Greythorn is home to many Asian eateries. What’s your favourite cuisine?
